Bundesliga

Bundesliga

The Bundesliga or the Federal League is a football association part of the German league system. The league developed quite late in 1963, as opposed to other countries, the structure undergoing various changes until the present day. The Bundesliga was created in Dortmund with the help of DFB president Hermann Neuberger on July 28, 1962. At that time, there were five upper leagues representing each part of Germany. 46 clubs applied for admission but only 16 were selected to enter the league.

The Bundesliga is composed of two divisions: the First Bundesliga, and  the Second Bundesliga. In the 2008-2009, a third division will be added to Bundesliga. A team can join the Bundesliga if it has a license to play; this license is given based on financial and organizational guidelines. A team that has joined the league will get a greater share of revenues from television broadcast, a larger fan base and, consequently, a greater exposure. The most well-known clubs in the First Bundesliga include Bayern Munich,  FC Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund.

At the end of each season, the last three teams in the First Division are relegated to the Second Bundesliga. In exchange, the first three teams from the Second Division are promoted into the First and will compete in the season that follows. The German football champion is decided through the Bundesliga.
