La Liga

La liga

La Liga or Liga de Fútbol Profesional is the famous professional football league in Spain. Next to Italy's Serie A and the Premier League, it is considered one of the best leagues around the world. La Liga is the first league, based on UEFA rankings, based on its performance in the European championships for the last 5 years.

The Spanish League was founded in 1928, based on the proposal of Jose Maria Acha, a director at Arenas Club de Getxo. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Atlético Madrid, RCD Espanyol, CE Europa, Arenas Club de Getxo and Real Unión were the first 10 teams that formed La Liga. The league takes places between September and June. There are also lower divisions to La Liga, Segunda División B and Tercera División, but these feature amateur or regional teams.

The winner of La Liga competes against the Copa del Rey winner for the Supercopa de España. The teams that occupy the first 4 places in the La Liga automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The top two qualify for the group stage, while the 3rd and 4th placed teams go to the 3rd qualifying round. The 5th and 6th placed teams qualify for the UEFA Cup. The last 3 times in the Primera Division are replaced by the first 3 teams of the Segunda Division.
