The FA Premier League is the professional competition among English football clubs. The Premier League is by far the most popular and most profitable of the football leagues. Before the 1990s, the English First League went through some hard times: revenues were poor and players were moving abroad, the division being behind Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga.
Still, after England's success in the 1990 World Cup, English clubs were allowed to play in European competitions. Finally, the Premier League was formed in 1992, from the clubs in the top division of the Football League. It held its first season between 1992 and 1993, to which 22 clubs took part. Sheffield United won the first game, with 2–1 against Manchester United. FIFA insisted so that the numbers of clubs participating be reduced that is why in 1995 20 clubs joined the competition.
The Premier League is owned by 20 clubs, each one having the right to vote rule changes or various contracts. A season lasts from August to May and features 38 games for each club, with a total of 380 games each season. 3 points are given to the winner and 1 for a draw. The club which has the most points receives the winning title at the end of the season.
The Premier League is without a doubt the most watched sporting league, being broadcasted in over 195 countries all over the world. Radio coverage of the Premier League can be heard via Sirius Satellite Radio. The Premier League is actively trying to stop the broadcast of free live streams online, that is why it has hired NetResult, a company specialized in protecting copyrights on the internet.
