The World Cup is the international football competition organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association every 4 years. The first football competition was a demonstration spot features in the 1904 Summer Olympics; 4 years later, football became an official competition at the Olympics in 1908. However, the event featured only amateurs and was regarded as merely a show.
FIFA was founded in 1904, recognizing in 1904 and managing the Olympic tournament, described as as a "world football championship for amateurs". At the 1920 Olympics, the first intercontinental football competition was organized, the gold medal being won by Belgium. When the Olympics were organized in 1932 in Los Angeles, football was not included because of its low popularity in the United States. FIFA then decided to organize its own world football championships.
The first World Cup was held in in Uruguay in 1930 and included 4 teams from South America, 4 from Europe and 2 from North America. France and the USA won the first two World Cup matches, that were held simultaneously. The final was won by Uruguay, that defeated Argentina 4-2 in Montevideo. Still, few teams were willing to travel the ocean to enter this championship. Eventually, the competition was canceled due to World War II for the 1942 and 1946 editions.
