Scotland National Football Team

Scotland

Head coach: Alex McLeish
Captain: Barry Ferguson
Top scorer: Kenny Dalglish, Denis Law
FIFA ranking: 23

The Scotland national football team represents Scotland in international football and is controlled by the Scottish Football Association. Scotland are the oldest national football team in the world, alongside England, whom they played in the world's first international football match in 1872.

Although part of the United Kingdom, Scotland maintains its own representative side that competes in all major professional tournaments, but does not compete at the Olympics as Scotland is not a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Some of Scotland's most famous results include defeating the World Cup holders England 3-2 at Wembley Stadium in 1967, and defeating tournament finalists the Netherlands in the 3-2 1978 World Cup, with Archie Gemmill scoring a famous goal. More recently, in October 2006 Scotland defeated World Cup 2006 runners-up France 1-0.

Traditionally England have been Scotland's fiercest rivals, though in recent times senior level fixtures between the teams have become uncommon. Scotland won the last encounter 1-0 in 1999.
